How did you choose your area of study?

Having always had a diversity of interests made deciding on only one subject to study in college unimaginable. However, I quickly realized I could compromise by studying the one subject that interconnects all other topics, neuroscience. As I began taking classes in neuroscience and volunteering in the medical field with patients, I was also faced with watching my grandmother’s mind gradually deteriorate from Alzheimer’s disease. This reinforced how important neuroscience is to me. I recognized that neuroscience is a far more powerful and crucial tool in medicine both for developing techniques to treat dreadful diseases and understanding how to interact more effectively with patients, who are people with a mind rather than a condition. I hope to use the skills I have gained in and out of the classroom to continue learning about the brain and eventually apply that to improving the medical field.
