Man Up: The Impact of Gender and Self-Presentation on Female Applicant Success

Academic Interests

I am a double major in Business and Data Science. I am also very interested in the history of the development of ancient civilizations, such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China.

Hometown

Yerevan, Armenia

High School

United World College-Dilijan

Co-curricular

Last year, I was involved in the organization of the V-week. Multiple, crucial events during that week opened conversations about different feminist viewpoints. Next year, I am planning on joining the team of It's On Us. This organization's amazing work on raising awareness about sexual assault and opening up spaces where people can talk about these big and deep-rooted issues has had a powerful impact to me.

My Dream Job

I don't really have a clear picture of my dream job, but it is definitely in the tech industry.

What do you hope to learn from your Richter experience this summer?

From my Richter experience this summer, I hope to learn better communication and working skills in a group environment. Having the opportunity to do research with a professor promises to be an eye-opening experience. Learning how to organize my own work to match the set requirements is a skill I will take with me going forward. I chose to participate in the Richter Scholar Program because I am interested in the project I am doing with Professor Batz-Barbarich, which explores the way differences in gendered language in resumes affect a person's chances of getting an interview, especially in traditionally male-dominated industries. As a woman who wants to work in the tech industry, which is extremely male-dominated, learning about small details about the hiring process will help me and other women create systemic change.
