Associate/Assistant Dean of Students

Lake Forest College seeks applications for an Associate/Assistant Dean of Students. The Associate/Assistant Dean serves as the Dean’s designee in a variety of functions and plays a crucial role in both advocacy and accountability, supporting our students and their community. The Associate/Assistant Dean holds responsibility for students in transition to and from the College, and commuting/transfer students. The Associate/Assistant Dean directly supports students in crisis (including the Chair of EASST and primary case management) and administers the Student Emergency Fund. The Associate/Assistant Dean manages the student conduct process in close collaboration with Residence Life.  The Associate/Assistant Dean also partners with colleagues in the Dean of the Faculty’s office and Institutional Research to systematically improve student success.  

Responsibilities include:                                           

Campus Life Leadership:

  • Serve in place of the Dean of Students in their absence, and by designation. 
  • Support students in transitions to/from the College.
  • Support commuting, transfer students, and non-traditional students with their unique needs. 
  • Manage reviews of student files for relevant Dean’s approval, including but not limited to: eligibility checks, off-campus study, transfer, graduate or professional school, and background checks for employment.
  • Serve as a point of contact for students navigating complex issues involving multiple campus departments (academic, financial aid, counseling, relief, etc.). 
  • Assist the Dean of Students with Campus Life operations such as the Student Handbook and other internal processes. 
  • Participate in the Dean-on-Call duty rotation as a back-up to the Residence Directors.  

Student Success, Retention, and Case Management:

  • Chair the Behavioral Evaluations and Response (BEAR) team and oversee relevant processes. 
  • Chair the Early Alert Student Support Team (EASST) and serve as the primary case manager.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Academic Success on student success and retention initiatives. 
  • Administer the Student Emergency Fund. 
  • Ensure compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Campus Act and the Anti-Hazing Act. 
  • Fulfill the role of Liaison for Housing and Opportunities that are Useful for Students' Excellence (HOUSE) program.  
  • Manage online education modules (i.e. Vector Solutions). 
  • Assist the Dean of Students with coordination of support to students in crisis, ensuring appropriate support and communication with stakeholders.

Accountability:

  • Manage the Student Conduct process under the supervision of the Dean of Students and keep case management records in Maxient.  
  • Assign cases to Residence Directors and provide informal supervision
  • Serve as a hearing officer for upper-level cases 
  • Consult with Title IX office regarding case overlap.

Campus and Community Partnerships:

  • Serve on the Commencement Committee and coordinate Campus Life staff roles in Commencement
  • Chair the Student Life Committee. 
  • Serve on campus committees as assigned.

Qualifications

Masters degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree required. Four years of relevant full-time experience. Experience with managing student conduct and/or case management required. Previous experience at a small liberal arts college preferred. Must have demonstrated experience effectively working collaboratively across campus departments.  

Proficient with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Strong organizational and administrative skills. Strong oral and written communication. Capacity to present information to groups.  

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $75,000 - $85,000
