Discovering an interest in research

Prior to arriving at Lake Forest College, Paul Jones ’18 had no idea that he would choose neuroscience as a major.

"I have always been interested in exploring multiple fields of inquiry and the neuroscience major combines the aspects of many fields that I find intriguing," he said.

His interest was further piqued after taking BIOL 130: Deadly Shapes and Hostage Brains and learning about how the principles of molecular biology can be understood and how they relate to human disease. "That's when I decided that neuroscience was the major right for me."

Three years later, and "after about a dozen classes, and three years of summer research with Dr. D, I feel comfortable with and still love learning anything about the brain or its diseases," Jones said. "Overall, the neuroscience program here has solidified my love of the pursuit of knowledge and will definitely help me start a future career in research.
