ARTificial is a provocative new exhibition that merges reproductive justice, artificial intelligence, and deeply personal storytelling. This interactive installation draws from three fertility journeys shaped by race, gender, immigration, and AI-driven healthcare systems.

The exhibition will be open from August 28 to September 28.

Presented through AI-assisted narratives and curated artifacts—both real and fabricated—ARTificial invites visitors to engage with intimate accounts:

  • Carlos, a Cuban-American lawyer, and his husband Kevin, who relocate for equitable IVF access.
  • Aisha, a Black urban planner whose fertility was compromised by a delayed fibroids diagnosis.
  • Mai, a Vietnamese immigrant and programmer navigating cultural stigma and algorithmic fertility tracking.

Each story is brought to life through curated artifacts from their ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) experiences—such as hormone pens, ultrasound images, and legal documents—embedded with QR codes that unlock intimate audio narratives. This multi-modal storytelling approach humanizes clinical procedures, revealing the emotional, financial, and sociopolitical layers often hidden within fertility treatment.

Funded by the Mellon Foundation’s HUMAN grant, ARTificial is co-created by artist and curator Tracy Marie Taylor using generative AI tools. “Just as I relied on AI to shape this work, fertility patients now turn to machines for decisions once left to chance or human judgment. Who creates life—or art—when AI is in the room?,” the associate professor of art and art history said.

The exhibition raises urgent questions:

  • What happens when algorithms shape who becomes a parent?
  • Can AI-assisted creation still be called human?
  • How does reproductive care reflect broader inequities in law, insurance, and diagnosis?

Through immersive design and critical storytelling, ARTificial offers timely reflection on authorship, agency, and humanity in the age of automation.
