Critical thinking student learning outcomes for African American Studies
Critical Thinking definition (per the AACU): “Critical thinking is a habit of mind characterized by the comprehensive exploration of issues, ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating an opinion or conclusion.”
Based on the 2021 book, The History of Black Studies, by Abdul Alkalimat, Black/African American Studies developed over the 20th century – present day with the following learning goals:
- To study of African descendant people
- To center Black voices
- To counter racism and contribute to human liberation
- To celebrate the Black experience
- To engage the ways the Black experience is a case study of the human condition—the intersectionality of the Black experience
