Tenzin Tsomo '25, a computer science major with a neuroscience minor, is studying abroad at the University of Seoul.

Seoul has been one of the most amazing experiences I could’ve ever asked for. From the first week, it has been a blur of meeting wonderful people, gorgeous places, and unforgettable moments. As the semester draws to an end, I know that I’ll look back on these memories ten or twenty years from now and remember them with fondness and love.

The three months began bitterly initially as I was alone in a new country and the language was completely unfamiliar despite the countless Duolingo lessons. I struggled to order food, cabs, and even access my own accommodation. I found myself quite unsure about the big decision I’d made. But as time went on, the problems shrank compared to the excitement and the wonder Seoul brought to me.

One of my favorite memories was a hiking trip to Mount Seoraksan. It was a four-hour long journey which I went into blindly thinking it was a hiking trail that would last half an hour. As exhausted as I was, the great company I had made it a lot easier. It ended up being 20 miles of laughter and joy where I found people I’ll cherish forever. And when the moment arrived as we made it to the top of the mountain, I felt all of my aches melt away to bring forth absolute awe. We were so high up that the birds were flying right past us and the entire valley was below our feet. Easily one of the most rewarding experiences ever.

This study abroad semester has been nothing short of incredible. I’ve learned things about Korea and myself that I’ll carry for the rest of my life. Thank you Lake Forest College for giving me this opportunity and the Global Engagement Office for their extensive help!
