Study Abroad and Domestic Study Away

Notes from Abroad: Mayra in Italy

December 01, 2019

Mayra Tlatelpa ’21, a double major in English Literature and American Studies, studied in Milan, Italy, at Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

My time studying in Italy allowed me to grow as an individual and as a student. I am an English Literature major, meaning that whenever someone new heard that I was planning to study abroad in Italy, I would inevitably hear the question, “why?”. I would answer by telling them about the courses I was planning to take and the places I was planning to visit, but even I did not realize then how much my experience in Italy would influence the way I would start thinking about my future.

During my program in Milan I was able to take courses in publishing with professors in the industry. I even got to tour an Italian publishing house and present my book cover design to professionals working in the field!

Additionally, I was able to gain expertise from writers working in television and film. I worked on creative writing skills in a way that is not available in the regular Lake Forest curriculum, and learned script writing and adaptation through an Italian cultural lens.

I am so glad that I chose to study abroad with the ISEP Milan program. I am incredibly grateful for the donors who made the SPEROS award possible. Without them I would not have been able to afford my study abroad experience. Because of my experience, I am now exploring new career paths and writing at a higher level than I have before.
