Study Abroad and Domestic Study Away

Notes from Abroad: Ava in Greece

November 25, 2019

Studio Art major Ava Gleason ’20 is studying at the American College of Greece in Athens

I am currently studying in Greece this semester and I’m wrapping up my final couple weeks! As I try to enjoy every second and reflect on my experience, I can’t help to feel excited to go home. This experience had been a lifelong dream of mine, I got to live in a beautiful place far from my home, experience the culture, new delicious food, and had the opportunity to travel around Europe. I think waiting as a senior to study abroad made this particularly eye opening for me. As I have been experiencing the greatness of Greece; the Mediterranean Sea, plenty of pastries, strong coffee, and the new language I have realized something about traveling to a new place makes you deeply appreciative of what you already have.

I am very grateful for the experience in adapting to a new place, new perspective on education and out of the classroom experience this semester has given me. I got to live out a dream of mine in one of my final semesters of college. This experience certainly  helped me put more of my post grad plans in a larger perspective and has given me a bigger insight of who I am. I think that is one of the most important parts of this experience given you are in a new place meeting new people basically starting over as a freshman in college again it gives you the experience to learn who you are to a greater depth. I am so thankful for the donations Lake Forest College has provided me to make this trip possible and special thanks to Demertizis/Cole prize that I was provided. Overall Greece gave me the opportunity to slow down and experience the beauty of life and find out a lot more about myself and I will always look back at this time as a significant learning experience for me as a student but also as I start my career as an artist.
