Broadening his knowledge

Stephen Buban ’21 added a second major in African American studies to broaden his knowledge of American history.

The sociology and anthropology major chose to double-major in African American studies at Lake Forest College because "the classes offered in this department have the power to educate an individual on some of the most important topics in American history—beyond what other departments can do," he said.

"So much of what is taught in African American studies classes is often neglected in elementary and high school curriculums, despite the fact that they bear so much of an impact on the lives of Americans today," he said. "It is essential to be educated on the harsh realities of the history and current nature of this country."

Buban notes the professors in the Department of African American Studies "want their students to come away with a unique and informed perspective so that they can understand the gravity and importance of the African American experience."
