Γειά σου! I’m Ruth E. Castillo-Espinoza, a senior at LFC, and I’m currently majoring in Spanish and International Relations and minoring in Philosophy. Currently, I’m studying abroad in Athens, Greece at the American College of Greece. Though my time here in Athens is coming to an end, I now able to look back at all the memories I’ve created. Not only that, but I’m able to reflect on the personal growth that has taken place.

During my time abroad, I had the great opportunity of exploring different parts of Greece. On my last trip, I and some friends made our way to the Meteora Monasteries in Meteora, Greece. While the train ride was long, we were amazed by the stunning scenery along the way. In this beautiful city reside large rock formations which cover the land. On these rocks lie Eastern Orthodox monasteries, which were built centuries ago. Once my friends and I arrived at the top of these rock mountains, we enjoyed a view of the city below and all the nature surrounding us. It was truly a magical experience.

Since arriving in Greece, I’ve grown mentally. For the first time in my life, I had been away from my family and home. Given that it was a 4-month-long experience, I knew that I would experience homesickness and culture shock. Fortunately, I chose to be patient with myself. Along the way, I’ve welcomed new opportunities and experiences. Here, I’ve made many great friends, ate new foods, took numerous trips, learned a new language, embraced a new culture, and more. Thus, upon reflection, I can say that I’ve grown in confidence. Now, I know that I can accomplish any goal that I have in mind.

In sum, I will remember my time in Greece for the rest of my life. I’m so fortunate to have had this opportunity to travel and learn. I am sad to be leaving the country that has fostered this growth. Despite this, I know I am coming home with a new mind and heart.
