Jazlyn Mendieta-Castro '23, a double major in Spanish and communications, is studying abroad at Universidad Nebrija in Madrid, Spain.

From my last note I have been able to explore more and have been checking off locations on my list. One of the major highlights of my time so far has been going to Portugal for a weekend trip, visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid, and going to Alcala de Henares.

Madrid is so interesting and there’s many things to do and explore within the country, but I have had the opportunity to visit Portugal which was an amazing experience. In Portugal it was very interesting to see that there was far more English, where you could find a lot of signs also in English, restaurant names, and just more people who speak English compared to that of Madrid.

Everything feels super close in Madrid, you can be in Plaza de España and before you know it, you’ll be in Plaza Mayor and if you walk just a bit more you’ll get to the Royal palace of Madrid. My school Nebrija is a ten-minute walk from Plaza de España so it was very easy exploring the city having a landmark very close to the midst of everything. Traveling using the metro is very easy and as students we get a discount and this card can take you many places, for me I was able to go to Alcala de Henares which is a little further away and you take a different type of train to get there, wonderful experience.

It has been great being here and exploring and I’ve been loving my time here but I’m ready to spend the holidays with my family and get back to the Forest!

I wanted to give a big thank you to my donors G. Dale Smith and Ruth Peterson and the Forester Day Donors for the scholarship I was given!
