WGN News spotlights Lake Forest College premiere inspired by young cancer survivor

A powerful story of music, resilience, and hope reached a wider audience on May 1, 2025, when WGN News aired a 4-minute feature on Lake Forest College’s musical premiere inspired by 11-year-old cancer survivor, Kamila.
The piece, performed by the College’s Band, Orchestra, and Choir, was the culmination of collaboration between Sing Me a Story, Make a Wish Illinois and the College to bring Kamila’s cancer journey to life through music. The WGN segment captured behind-the-scenes rehearsals, interviews with students and faculty, and moments from the April 25 performance at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest.
“I’m so touched by this phenomenal project and so proud to have been a small part of it.”
This collaboration involved the bands under the direction of Associate Professor of Music Scott Edgar, the orchestra under the direction of Associate Professor of Music Nick Wallin, and the choirs under the direction of Associate Professor of Music Anne Barry. This performance was the world premiers of Kamila’s Story by Benjamin Martin, a Chicago composer.
Reflecting on the project, Edgar said: “I’m so touched by this phenomenal project and so proud to have been a small part of it.” Edgar gifted his conductor’s baton to Kamila after the concert.
This national exposure highlights the College’s commitment to community partnerships, student creativity, and the transformative power of the arts.
