From Blues to Broadway: Exploring America’s Most Treasured Musical Styles

Opening and closing reception on the first and last week of classes (30 minutes)

Lake Forest College welcomes community members and alumni to a five-week journey through the sounds that shaped American music. “From Blues to Broadway” invites participants to dive into the stories, styles, and social movements behind some of our nation’s most influential musical traditions. Each class blends history, listening, and conversation, creating space to explore how these genres emerged, evolved, and continue to resonate today. Held at the newly renovated Glen Rowan House, this series also offers opportunities to build community, engage with College leadership, and learn more about ongoing campus initiatives.

Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, but full attendance is not required.

  • How music reflects social movements, identity, and cultural change 
  • Connections between blues, musical theater, classical, and contemporary styles 
  • How listening deeply enhances understanding and enjoyment of music 

Optional final project

Participants may choose to complete a short reflective or creative project, such as a listening journal, brief presentation, or curated playlist, connecting course themes to personal interests. This project is optional and designed for enrichment rather than assessment.
