Students in Visiting Assistant Professor of Politics Stephanie Caparelli’s Political Science 266: The Judiciary class had the opportunity to speak with renowned federal courts expert and CNN’s Supreme Court analyst Steve Vladeck during class on April 17.

Vladeck, who holds the Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law, spoke with the students via Zoom, offering his insight on the U.S. Supreme Court and the shadow docket. His book, The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic, will be out in May 2023.

“It was truly a pleasure to hear from Professor Vladeck,” said Chris Czarnik ’23. “It was an insightful experience to learn the history of the shadow docket, its significance on the Court and how it was utilized to decide controversial cases, and how lower federal courts use it to decide future cases.”

A double major in business and data science who is also minoring in legal studies, Czarnik has accepted a job with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in a compliance role with their Risk Management division after graduation and is considering law school in the future.

“Knowing about the shadow docket and what is going on with the Court is helpful in that respect, especially cases being decided that relate to finance and the economy,” Czarnik said.
