Associate Professor of Anthropology Rebecca Graff’s archaeological dig at Chicago’s Mecca Flats apartment complex is featured in the Chicago Architecture Center’s Open House Chicago 2021 festival.

A stop at Mecca Flats, once a gathering spot for Chicago's Black Renaissance, is included on the “Preservation Across Chicago” trail—a guided tour that includes the Phyllis Wheatley Home, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley House, and the Muddy Waters Residence.

The tour’s app features an interview with Graff and photos from the dig she conducted at the legendary apartment building site in July 2018. The storied residence was destroyed in 1952.

The Chicago Architecture Center annually hosts the October Open House Chicago—a free public festival that offers self-guided history and architecture trails throughout Chicago, talks and programming, and behind-the-scenes access to architecturally, historically and culturally significant sites across the city.

Open House Chicago remains one of the largest events of its kind in the world. This year's in-person site visits occur on October 16 and 17, with extended programming and city-wide trails available for the entire month of October. Self-guided trails are available anytime via the free Open House Chicago app.
