Professor of French and Chair of Modern Languages and Literatures Cynthia Hahn's third book of poetry, Haiku for the Journey, will be published by Finishing Line Press, on March 13, 2026.

The book is illustrated by Hahn's longtime friend and collaborator Monique Loubet, who lives in Paris. The pair also collaborated on Hahn's second book of poetry.

“My Asian-inspired garden with its evergreens and deciduous trees, as well as combination of stone and water, is a resource for many of these haiku, as is the lush Oregon coastline, where my parents used to reside," Hahn shared. “I am grateful to Lake Forest College for its long-time support of publication of creative work, as I have been teaching creative writing in French at the College, and hope to inspire my students to embrace creative pursuits, whether in writing, music or the visual arts."

“Haiku for the Journey evokes joy and a sense of play, an instantaneous spark as you read the words and see the art weaving a tapestry of rich imagination,” Krebs Provost and Dean of the Faculty, and Vice President for Academic Affairs Tara Natarajan shared. “Cynthia is retiring from the College in May 2026, and she is demonstrating to us that the teacher-scholar is always writing, teaching, and creating.”

Hahn was also recognized a the first-prize winner by First Light Journal for her poem ‘Breath Tender.’ This poem was drafted during a writing group session with two other Lake Forest College well-recognized poetry and prose-writing professors who inspire her, Kathryn Dohrman and Lois Barr. Hahn noted, “We call our group the Bluff Coast Writers, and inspire each other monthly with writing prompts and a shared meal, supportive tender for the spirit and the body.”
