Crain’s Chicago names William Lowry ’84 a ‘Notable Black Leader’
Crain’s Chicago Business has named Board Chairman William Lowry ’84 a 2024 Notable Black Leader. This prestigious honor highlights exceptional Black professionals in Chicago who have made significant contributions in their fields while positively impacting their communities.
An attorney who has practiced law more than 30 years, Lowry has been at the forefront of legal and political initiatives that foster equity and uplift under-resourced communities across Chicago.
Today, Lowry is President and a member of the Board of Directors of Nyhan, a law firm in Chicago, where he oversees the firm’s policy development, hiring, attorney education, and strategic growth. He manages a diverse team and drives the firm’s DEI and pro bono initiatives while also leading its workers’ compensation and employer liability practices for insured and self-insured businesses.
In Chicago’s political sphere, Lowry was invited to join Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson’s Economic Vitality and Equity Subcommittee transition team. He has served as the 3rd District Cook County Commissioner since 2018 and was previously appointed by the governor to the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Board (2012–2015) and as Vice-Chair of the Capital Development Board (2014–2018).
Lowry’s political ascent began as the first African American in Illinois state history to secure a seat on the Capital Development Board. Throughout his career, he has been committed to uplifting under-resourced communities and fostering sustainable, multicultural neighborhoods.
Additionally, Lowry helped found the It’s Time Organization, which aims to address youth violence holistically. He is a member of several bar associations and serves as an Honorary Trustee of Ancona Montessori School.
