How did you explore your interests and decide on a major/majors?
I have been learning French since high school, and I was already deeply interesting in continuing my learning of the language. I found that French worked perfectly alongside my interest in international relations, and it helped me inform my choice of both majors.
Describe a moment or experience you had in college that helped define your career path
My year studying abroad in France has completely changed my life; it gave me academic and professional connections, and opened my eyes to new perspectives. My experience in France was a deciding factor in pursuing a post-graduate degree at a European university.
What steps did you take at Lake Forest College to prepare for your career?
I focused very much on my French language learning to prepare for my study abroad, with special thanks to my professors– this was probably the most important step in my academic journey as my competency in French was a large factor in both gaining connections in France and elsewhere, and was a huge factor in making my applications to graduate schools stick out.
What role did study abroad play in shaping your career path?
My study abroad in France prepared me for both academic and professional future experiences. I gained valuable insight into post-graduate education through taking Masters-level courses in the French language, and I was able to make lasting professional and personal connections all in a new language. My study abroad and language skills learned during my experiences in France were most certainly a major factor in my acceptance to graduate school.
What would you recommend Lake Forest College students considering a career in your field do to prepare?
Practicing a language you wish to learn daily goes a long way toward fluency. Learning to speak and think critically in another language is also extremely important, and my ability to do so has been invaluable to my success. Additionally, one must learn to accept and embrace cultural differences, otherwise it will significantly affect language learning and motivation to do so. Believe it or not, cultural differences play a huge role in language learning as words are intrinsically linked to culture.
How did the Department of Modern Languages, other department, Career Advancement Center and/or the Forester community give you an edge on taking your first steps after graduation?
My professors prepared me well, both in the Department of Modern Language and Department of Politics and International Relations, for real-world professional and academic development. I was able to make my applications stand out due to the valuable education that I received, as well as the connections and experience that I gained through my education helping me while I was in France.
What have you found the most rewarding in your career and life after graduation?
Personal connections and cultural exchanges.
