3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Calvin Durand Hall, Mohr Student Center

Join us as we host Deputy Consul General Dirk Schulz of the Federal Republic of Germany for a moderated conversation using short musical excerpts as cultural reference points. Beginning with memories of divided Germany and the Cold War, the discussion will move through the era of reunification and into contemporary reflections on identity, civic responsibility, and generational change.

Deputy Consul General Dirk Schulz currently serves at the Consulate General of Germany in Chicago. Over the course of his diplomatic career, he has witnessed the evolving role of Germany in Europe and the international community. His experience offers a unique perspective on how democratic institutions develop resilience and continuity across generations.

The lecture will include discussion of the following musical pieces:

  • Über Sieben Brücken - Karat (1978)
  • 99 Luftballons - Nena (1983)
  • Wind of Change - Scorpions (1990)
  • J Willkommen in Deutschland - Die toten Hosen (1993

The event will take the form of a 60-minute moderated conversation followed by a 30-minute audience discussion, providing students and faculty the opportunity to engage directly with questions about history, diplomacy, and civic life.
