Kyle Lee '26, an International Relations major with a Business minor, studied abroad at Webster University in Geneva, Switzerland.

One of my favorite memories from my time abroad was getting a random text from a housemate asking if I wanted to go to France with them, just to get groceries. I remember sitting there in complete awe, realizing how surreal it was that crossing into another country could be as casual as running an errand. Moments like that made me appreciate the unique convenience of living in Geneva. The airport was near my residence, and Switzerland’s location in the heart of Europe made travel incredibly accessible.

Adjusting to life in Switzerland was definitely a lesson. The cost of living was a shock, everything felt insanely expensive compared to what I was used to in the U.S. and Swiss culture, with its rules, quietness, and efficiency, was such a contrast to the warmth and loud friendliness of both my cultures (american and filipino). At first, I felt out of place, worried I was doing something wrong or standing out too much. But over time, I learned how to navigate the norms, budget more carefully, and appreciate the structure and calm that Swiss people value. It pushed me to become more independent, organized, and resilient.

The accessibility to travel was a huge part of my experience. In just four and a half months, I visited Copenhagen, Malmö, Cyprus, London, Annecy, Barcelona, Istanbul, Florence, Cinque Terre, Milan, Pisa, Tuscany, Crema, Paris, Prague and of course explored all over Switzerland. The more places I visit and the more experiences I have, the more I realize just how big the world truly is. With every new thing I learn, I become aware of how much I still don’t know and how many places are still waiting for me to explore.

One element of my program that had a particularly positive impact on me was how much it encouraged exploration, both academically and personally. Having the freedom and support to travel, meet people from different cultures (in Switzerland and specifically Webster, you will meet people from everywhere, one of my favourite moments was being asked where I was from and being able to talk about the Philippines), and navigate life in a completely new environment helped me grow more confident and adaptable. Switzerland challenged me, but it also opened me up to experiences I never imagined having.

Overall, studying abroad didn’t just give me memories, it genuinely changed how I see the world, and myself.

I would like to thank the Margaret Thomson Pavelka Scholarship as I couldn't have experienced this life-changing semester without such generous help.
