Julián Cano '23

Julián Cano '23, a business major (marketing concentration) with a minor in communication, studied abroad his fall semester at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.

My name is Julián Cano, and I am currently studying abroad at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. It has been a phenomenal opportunity that has afforded me so many experiences I will never forget. I have been able to immerse myself into the daily Milanese lifestyle. From walking to the local café and ordering a “cappuccio” and “brioche” for breakfast before class, to discovering all the delicious cuisine the city has to offer. I have even been able to take a culinary course where I was able to learn how to make many famous dishes, not only from Milan, but the entire country such as, Spaghetti all’Amatriciana, Risotto Milanese and of course Tiramisù.

One of the highlights being in Milan has been experiencing the city during the famous Fashion Week. I was lucky enough to see how the city comes to life and the energy that this event brings Milan. Walking around the city center and fashion district you can casually walk into famous people and experience the street fashion that Milan is famous for. I was also fortunate enough to attend two different fashion shows.

Being in Milan, I have also had the opportunity to travel to different parts of Italy. I traveled to Como, Torino, and Palermo, Sicily, which is an island in the south of Italy. The culture, food and tradition are vastly different and has a beautiful Mediterranean feel there. I not only traveled within Italy, but was fortunate enough to travel, to Spain, Greece, Morocco, Switzerland, and Portugal with many of the friends I met here in Milan as well as fellow Lake Forest College students studying abroad.

I would like to thank the Speros fund for granting me the Ingrid H. and George L. Speros Scholarship for Study Abroad and affording me assistance in making all these memories and experiences come to light.
