Notes from Abroad: Isabella in Costa Rica

Isabella Halden '26, an Environmental Studies major, is studying abroad at Veritas University in San Jose, Costa Rica
As I’ve been preparing to return to the States, I have been able to reflect on my study abroad experience as a whole. For me, the people I interact with on a daily basis have most significantly shaped my time here in Costa Rica.
My professors have all been thoroughly and uniquely experienced in their respective fields. Due to the small class sizes, I have had every opportunity to communicate individually with all my professors about questions, concerns, and advice about my future career. Although I was only in their classes for a few months, all my professors seemed invested in my education and understanding of course content. Without a doubt, they have been crucial pillars in advancing my knowledge within my future career field.
My classmates have also shaped my educational experience at Veritas University. It has been so fun to study alongside and work with students from across the United States. While we all share an interest in environmental science, we all have difference specific interests and backgrounds that serve to further enrich this very special study opportunity.
Finally, my homestay family helped make what could have been a very stressful and scary experience into an exciting and comfortable adventure. My homestay mother—Rosa—has been incredibly welcoming from my first day in her house. I have been shocked to not feel at all homesick during my time here in Costa Rica, but I know that has been because I haven’t been without a home these past few months. My homestay isn’t simply a place to eat and sleep, it has been people who haven’t hesitated to welcome me into their family, with whom I can talk and laugh and share stories.
While it will be difficult to say goodbye to the beautiful country of Costa Rica and all the amazing people I have had the opportunity to meet, I’m so excited to apply all the knowledge I have learned into my continued education and eventual career.
My greatest appreciation to the Ingrid H. and George Speros Scholarship donation and all the staff at the Global Engagement Office for helping at every step of this amazing experience!
