Giada Tenace '24, a communications and studio art double major, is studying abroad at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay in Montevideo, Uruguay.

I have landed in Uruguay a couple of months ago. I have decided to study abroad in Latin America because I wanted to finally get a full fluency in Spanish, even though I am not majoring nor minoring in it. Uruguay is a very small country in between two Latin American giants: Argentina, and Brazil. Nonetheless, the rich culture of this small country doesn’t stop to amaze me.

I have met some incredible people, and this country gave me the opportunity to learn about myself and further challenge my limits. I have taken my time to evolve and pursue my passions and found new ones. I am a communication and art major, and Montevideo is an extremely artistic and vibrant city, therefore I have been spending my time learning and immersing myself in the art world through exhibitions and museums. Moreover, I discovered a new interest as well, I started training in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, in which I found a fun way to keep myself active and also spend time with local people outside of the academic sphere.

The university is nice, I am taking Photography, Drawing, Aesthetics, and Uruguayan culture; learning in a different language is always difficult at the beginning of the journey, but I got used to it quickly. The most difficult part was getting used to the Uruguayan slang, luckily, I have made some close local friends, that have been the best teachers and guides I could ever asked for.

Some of the favorite moments I have had here so far have been my trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Sundays afternoons in my favorite park of Montevideo, el Parque Rodò; and chill nights by the beach in Floresta, a town in the South Eastern coast.

Going to Buenos Aires from Montevideo is very easy, and I took advantage of that a couple of times already. Being a person that prefers more quiet places, Montevideo was the best option for me, Buenos Aires is beautiful, but very chaotic.

Overall, this program in Uruguay already gifted me some incredible experiences, and has been a place that taught me so much already, my program officially ends on December 17th, but I am taking advantage of the summer time here to travel around the country and visit the places I haven’t yet got a chance to see, such as Cabo Polonio, Punta del Diablo y Rocha.
