Notes from Abroad: Brodie in France

Brodie Kaufman '26, a French and Sociology and Anthropology double major with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, studied at Nantes Université in Nantes, France.
My second semester abroad has been a time of deeper immersion into French culture, personal growth, and meaningful exploration. I switched programs this term, moving from History, Art History, and Archaeology to a language-focused program designed to help students strengthen their French. This change allowed me to meet others on a similar journey, which made the experience more enriching and supportive. This semester also offered ample opportunities to travel. During my first two-week break, I visited family in Berlin and Prague. Later in the semester, I spent my second break with my mom and sister in Portugal. After an intense period of coursework and final exams, I ended my study abroad experience by traveling to Naples and sharing the city of Nantes with more of my family.
Looking back, I’m amazed at how much I’ve grown, both personally and academically. I’ve faced challenges I never imagined I could overcome, and now I feel more confident navigating unfamiliar environments. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of connecting with people from different backgrounds and understanding life from their perspectives. Even in countries where I didn’t speak the language, I made an effort to engage with the local culture in an open and authentic way. These efforts made my experience far more rewarding and memorable.
As my year abroad comes to a close, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to learn, adapt, and grow. This semester not only strengthened my language skills but also broadened my worldview in ways that will stay with me in any situation. I’m especially grateful for the support I received from Lake Forest College throughout this process. Their guidance made a huge difference in my ability to make the most of this experience. For anyone considering studying abroad, I would encourage you to take the leap!
