Notes from Abroad: Brian in England
Brian Rivera '26, an English major with a Writing emphasis and a Museum Studies minor, studied abroad at the University of Roehampton in London, England.
Studying abroad in the UK has given me the opportunity to learn about the history that underlies so much literature and art by experiencing their inspirations up close and personal. From walking the grounds of Tintern Abbey in Wales to watching the waves roll beneath the White Cliffs of Dover in England, it felt surreal getting to walk in the same steps so many artists have before. London was at the heart of all these adventures, where I stayed for the duration of my studies. I met and made so many new friends who were also adjusting to a new city. I found myself never alone and always ready for the next day. I spoke with professors who were curious about my perspective. I got to ask them questions that were answered with both the lecture and the environment. My classrooms were both on and off campus, with some lectures taking place in museums around the city.
Growing up in Chicago, I know the big city experience well. It was incredible to see how that was reflected in London where something was always happening. Being here during the Fall term was especially exciting as the city prepared itself for the holidays. The streets were lively as crowds formed around Christmas markets and Christmas lights. As I get ready to return home, I recognize that while I will continue to move forward, grow, and see more of the world, my mind will always come back to my time in London, and I will think of it fondly. I walked the Putney high street almost daily and did schoolwork in its cafes. I had lectures in museums across the city, from the Wallace Collection to the National Gallery. London is now a part of me as I was once a part of it.
Thank you to the Suzanne T. Hotchkiss Foreign Travel Grant for making this experience possible.
