Notes from Abroad: Andrew on Réunion Island
Franck Andrew Kame '26, a Philosophy and French double major, studied abroad at Université de la Réunion in St. Denis, France.
Life is cyclical and the cycle is vital.
I found my foot dancing between creation and exploration.
At the right place at the right time, I feel in harmony with the chain of causality which led up until now. During my time at l’Université de la Réunion, I got to reset my creative mind. The past three months have been a true test of faith, which I am passing with flying colors — hiking the victory lap right now. Every step did not go as planned, as I visualized them. Yet, in my understanding that every cause has an effect, I found repose.
I arrived late — way to start a great journey. Although my academic workload was fairly lower than my home institution’s, I still found indecision, uncertainty, near bankruptcy, family, diplomacy, the future of work and all that good stuff increasingly overwhelming. When you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s hard to fathom a way out.
Thankfully, the brain is a handy machine; such a powerful asset for the spirit who wields it willfully.
Moreover, it’s high time I attached a renewed narrative to the patterns I had been contemplating silently — that is, breaking through hypnotic rhythm subsequently, letting go of circling to the profit of spiraling, shedding the old skin intentionally.
Less is more. We get so wrapped up in the idea of productivity, while rest is as important. Sometimes, the only medicine needed is to pause. Once that idea held true in my mind, inner composure returned…
It took intentional interactions with fellow artists, researchers, and with history itself. I chose daily initiation over regression, looking for the (next) tipping point that precedes each flow state.
On the eve of crossing the finish line of my college career, reasonable doubt arises. I got a number of options in hand, but I am yet to attract the One. Despite self-belief, am I ready for it? For how long will the frequency of faith be held by me?
Trill! The middle way is the winning way. In life, there is no finish line. Stability is found in between both extremes.
