Building a safer campus: $1M investment enhances security systems

Information Technology Services (ITS), in collaboration with Public Safety and Facilities Management, has completed a major campus-wide security system upgrade in time for the new academic year.
The project replaced outdated access control and surveillance systems, installing 113 new cameras and 108 card readers across 29 campus buildings, including all residence halls. Existing campus ID cards remain fully functional, ensuring a seamless transition for students, faculty, and staff.
“These enhancements strengthen campus safety, improve reliability, and streamline operations,” said Ravi Agarwal, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. “This is an important step forward in our ongoing commitment to fostering a safe and secure campus environment.”
Support for new initiatives
Funding for the new safety system came from several sources: Student Government, valued donors, and board members, whose support and financial contributions made this project possible. Special thanks to Board member and friend of the College Rob Krebs, who recently served as the Interim President and championed the effort, and to technology partner Siemens for their partnership in delivering the project on budget and on schedule.

“I’m impressed by how everyone prioritized their efforts to get the new system up and running in time for our student’s return to campus,” Krebs said.
Building on that commitment, Siemens emphasized the importance of bringing advanced technology to match the College’s vision for safety and community.
“Siemens is proud to support such a forward-thinking institution with a cutting-edge integrated security solution incorporating video cameras, access control and management, IT infrastructure, and software that enhances peace of mind for students, faculty, and staff,” said Steve Hassler, General Manager, Chicago & Milwaukee Area, Siemens Industry, Inc. – Smart Infrastructure.
Fostering safety with SafeForesters app
Complementing the infrastructure upgrade, the College launched SafeForesters on July 1—the College’s first mobile app dedicated to campus safety. Available to all students, faculty, and staff, the app integrates with the College’s Single Sign-On (SSO) system for secure access.
Designed to modernize and expand campus safety resources, SafeForesters allows the Public Safety Dispatch team to monitor alerts in real time and respond swiftly to emergencies. Key features include:
- Mobile BlueLight – A mobile version of the Blue Light towers, enabling quick alerts to Public Safety in case of a threat.
- Friend Walk and Virtual Walkhome – GPS-enabled tools that allow a trusted friend or Public Safety staff to monitor your walk across campus.
- Mass Notifications – Real-time updates on weather conditions, crime alerts, campus closures, and other important safety information.
- Emergency Alerts – One-touch access to immediately alert campus security and local authorities in emergencies.
“We encourage everyone—students, faculty, and staff—to download the app and explore its features,” Agarwal added. “SafeForesters places critical safety resources right at the fingertips of our students, faculty, and staff—bringing us one step closer to building a safer, more connected campus community.”
