Hosted by the Provost's office, Lake Forest College is delighted to bring an evening of exceptional Indian Classical Music by Artists in Residence Sitar Virtuoso Purbayan Chatterjee and Tabla Maestro Amit Kavthekar.

President of India awardee, Purbayan Chatterjee is known as India’s leading sitar maestro, who specializes in building bridges between different world genres and leads the band Classicool. He has several international albums to his credit which have topped the charts and are well recognized across the world. His recording and live performance collaborations include artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck, jazz legend Herbie Hancock, and Shankar Mahadevan among a long list of illustrious musicians.

Tabla maestro Amit Kavthekar was groomed in the coveted arts of Tabla playing by the legend Ustad Alla Rakha. He has also been taught the intricacies of Tabla by Ustad Zakir Hussain, the global phenomenon celebrated as the greatest percussionist in world music. Kavthekar also frequently collaborates with leading virtuosos of western classical, jazz, and fusion music. Outside of the concert stage, Kavthekar is a prolific music educator. He leads the New England School of Music in Boston, where he has taught Tabla to more than 400 students over the past decade.

Both musicians have played in venues such as Carnegie Hall, and we are thrilled to have them bring an evening of immersive and collaborative experience to our community. We thank the Departments of Music and Religion, the Krebs Center for the Humanities, and the Office of Advancement for their support in making this evening of transcendent musical experience possible.
