Program Assistant - Environmental Studies

Lake Forest College seeks a full-time department assistant to provide administrative and program support in the Environmental Studies department.

 Job Responsibilities

  • Supporting core departmental operations. Includes budget management in consultation with the department chair and greenhouse director, processing reimbursement requests and invoices, and reconciling credit card statements. Sourcing and ordering equipment for classes, labs, restoration work, etc. Maintaining and updating the ES department webpage and social media accounts, including photo-documenting campus restoration activity, field trips, and campus events (see below) for posting on the web and social media. Occasionally providing classroom support by administering quizzes or exams, material scanning and posting to Moodle.
  • Organizing and accompanying ES classes on field studies. This often includes overnight weekend work and an 8-day spring break trip. Duties include building the itinerary, booking stays, and researching natural areas and route, ensuring a smooth trip with accommodations for students and faculty.
  • Assisting with the operation and maintenance of various laboratories. Includes the teaching lab in the Lillard Science Center, the Wetland Learning Lab, campus restoration sites, the green roof space and greenhouse. Assisting with lab transitions and preparation including the organization of class material, sanitizing work areas, setting up microscopes and storing solutions.
  • Supporting greenhouse operations. Includes purchasing supplies, as well as hiring, training, and supervising greenhouse student workers.
  • Managing campus ecosystem restoration and composting activities. Hiring, training, and supervising restoration and composting workers.
  • Managing student garden operations. Hiring, training, and supervising garden student workers from April through October.  Also includes coordinating seed and plant purchasing, soil management, marketing, harvesting and sales.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel, plus an aptitude and willingness to learn new computer-related skills.
  • Ability to track budgets and expenses.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness to take initiative and follow through on projects.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with students, staff, and faculty.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • Background or course work in Environmental Studies.
  • Proficient with photography and social media (i.e. Facebook and Instagram),
  • Previous administrative experience.
  • Previous business experience a plus.
