Cheerio!

My name is Katelyn Jocson and I am currently studying abroad in London and I could not be any more at home. Although I have become used to living amongst the royalty and embracing the city – life of Central London, it would be an understatement that it was difficult to adjust at the beginning of my stay. The view that I have come to learn since being here is that the more expectations you have in a moment in time, or a place you are visiting, the harder it is to find your niche. There were moments in which I felt far away from comfort; away from home. I am originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado and when moving to study at Lake Forest College, I had trouble calling it my home. Similarly, at the beginning of my adventure here in London this was very much my mindset; however, just as I have done at LFC, I have found my place in London as well.

I am an English Major with an emphasis in Writing as well as an Art History minor. As you can see, my interests always lie in the expressions of oneself; the way in which people can connect with each other. London has influenced me in a way I would not have thought possible. Since my arrival, I have had the pleasure of visiting one of the most powerful historical landmarks, the Tower of London. I was in complete awe. To stand within the walls of England’s most notorious fortress which held some of England’s top historical figures such as Queen Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas Moore, was an indescribable experience. You feel completely immersed in a history and, for me, being in London has opened my mind to a new form of expression; a new way of communication. Standing in the midst of England’s history, has forced me to recognize the truth and the way monuments are able to tell a story. The Tower of London was a pivotal moment during my stay, and I am continually touring with an open mind and searching for such places that can tell me a story.

I am eager to see what other adventures London has in store for me, and await my return to the states to share them with my family, friends, and my family back at Lake Forest College. I would like to thank Dr. William H. Toner for awarding me the Toner Prize, for with his help, he is presenting me with opportunities of a lifetime and I am truly grateful.
