Yuhong Xie

How and why did you choose your area of study?

Like many other students just started their first year in college I was not sure what I wanted to study. So I chose economics knowing that I would obtain knowledge from to a variety of topics including mathematics, finance, accounting, and business. I was able to build a strong quantitative and analytical skills through these classes that benefit me a long way in my career.

What attracted you to Lake Forest College as an international student?

The intimate liberal arts environment. 

What do you think of the faculty?

My professors cared about the students.They made themselves accessible to students. They listened to students and understood what students need and provided constructive feedback. Professor Randall Iden provided me constant support when I struggled with classes during my first year of college due to my language barrier. Professor Robert Lemke and Professor Les Dlabay offered me helpful advice when I applied for graduate schools in my senior year.  Professor Kent Grote taught one of my favorite classes back in college, Economics and Law (hope I got the name right). I am grateful that after many years I still maintain connections with these professors. I am grateful that they always want me to do great, in my professional career and also in my personal life.

What makes Lake Forest College a great place to be as an international student?

LFC is a small but diverse community. I was able to build close connections with my college friends and faculty.

What advice would you have for an international student thinking about attending Lake Forest?

Do not be afraid to make connections with your professors and peer students. Explore and take advantage of any opportunities that LFC and Chicago offer. Be ready for the snow in the winter.

What experiences did you have at Lake Forest that better prepared you for your current professional career?

I applied for a resident assistant position in my sophomore year. It took me so much courage to apply for the position, to knock on the door of students who violated the dorm’s quiet hour policy, to host events in the resident building and talk in front of a large group. The two years of RA experience helped me understand that while being an introvert person, I can still communicate with efficiency, act with confidence and succeed in many leadership roles.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your time at Lake Forest?

I miss walking by the Lake Michigan in the summer.
