The Gates Center: Helping your child be involved

September 13, 2011

The new Director of the Gates Center, Bill Dlugokienski, provides some advice on helping your child be involved during their time at Lake Forest College.

Research shows that college students who become involved in extracurricular activities are more successful in their academic and career pursuits. Their involvement helps them make friends, gives them confidence, teaches them how to work well with others and provides them leadership skills that aid them in the classroom and in employment.  The Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth is here to help your child become involved at Lake Forest College.

With over fifty student organizations, the Gates Center provides opportunities for involvement outside the classroom. Student organizations range from academically focused to cultural/ethnic, leadership and service groups to Greek Life chapters, media related to environmental—there really is a group for every interest. Students can also start a new student organization related to their interests. The process is very easy and the Gates Center provides support and training for new student leaders.

Beyond student organizations, the Gates Center provides opportunities for leadership and service. With leadership workshops, trainings, speakers and retreats, students have the chance to learn about the many dimensions of leadership and how their leadership style affects the way they work with others. Students can also participate in community service programs and groups connected to their interests.

As parents, we hope you’ll help your child become involved on campus. Some questions you might ask:

-       Have you joined any student organizations?

-       What programs have you attended on campus?

-       What are you doing on campus beyond your classes?

If you find your student isn’t becoming involved in student groups or engaged in campus life, have them stop by the Gates Center. Any of the staff is willing to help your child find involvement opportunities that interest them. We can connect them with student groups, campus programs or service opportunities in the area.

Be sure to take a look at the Events Calendar at lakeforest.edu – there is always a lot happening on campus and it’s a great resource to know about in case your child feels like nothing is happening on campus.
