Ornis Mala ‘11 develops a new database as Lake Forest College enters a newer world of technology. A new database developed by the student helps the College keep track of all the equipment lending, charges, projects and much more, and makes it easier for faculty to make project requests.

The Brown Technology Resource Center, which opened in 2004, provides software support and training for faculty, staff, and students at Lake Forest College. Located in room 208 in the Donnelley and Lee Library, TRC has high-end computers available for training sessions or individual use. TRC houses a variety of scanners, including feed, flat-bed, large-format, film and slide scanners, along with color and poster printers. The center also contains video conversion equipment to transfer taped video to digital format on all platforms. The lending of a variety of equipment is available on a walk-in basis. Mala, a senior at the College pursuing computer science and economics majors and currently working at TRC, has developed the new database for the center.

Mala previously helped build the College’s online voting application software with professor Craig Knuckles in his Computer Science Senior Seminar in 2009. The course topic was collaborative software engineering in the context of database-driven web applications. Developing a much needed online voting application for the College was a perfect endeavor to give the class a real-world software application to build. The TRC database application was developed with a possibility of modification of data at any time based on user levels. Mala consulted with Connie Corso, Manager of TRC, on the necessary content and front end, user-experience portion of the database.
