Enrique Treviño leads Mexican team to third-place math olympiad win

Associate Professor of Mathematics Enrique Treviño participated in the IbernoAmerican Mathematical Olympiad as coach of the Mexican team, winning third place out of the 23 countries that participated. That same week, he was honored by Lathisms, an organization dedicated to honoring mathematicians of the Hispanic and Latinx communities.
Twenty-three countries participated in the 34th IberoAmerican Mathematical Olympiad, held in Guanajuato, Mexico, with teams from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and Mozambique.
Treviño’s team won three silver medals and a bronze, which earned the Mexican team third place overall.
The Lake Forest professor has had a long history with mathematical olympiads. In recent years, Treviño has assisted a number of teams, attending the 2017, 2018 and 2019 European Girls Math Olympiads. He has also been involved in training the Canadian and Mexican teams in the summers of 2017 and 2019 for the International Math Olympiad.
In other news, Treviño was honored by Lathisms, an organization honoring Hispanic mathematicians during Hispanic Heritage Month. He was recognized on September 19 for his many academic achievements as well as participating in mathematical olympics as both a student and later as a coach.
