Welcome letter from the Parents Council

August 17, 2016

The following is a welcome letter and email to new parents from the Lake Forest College Parents Council, sent August 13.

On behalf of the Lake Forest College Parents Council, welcome to the Forester Family!

With move-in and orientation less than a week away (closer for some!) we want to again offer information and support during final preparations.

What follows is some helpful information about move-in and orientation itself, and other dates to plan for in the coming year. If there’s anything we didn’t answer, it can likely be found by calling Parent Relations at the College 847-735-6025.

Orientation: Friday, August 19 – Saturday, August 20, 2016

Residential student move-in begins at 9:00 a.m. and commuter student check-in begins at 1:30 p.m on Friday. Orientation activities for students run throughout, and sessions for parents and families run from Friday afternoon through Saturday lunch.

Parent sessions (Friday afternoon, Saturday morning) - On Friday, you have the opportunity to get tips from Dean of Students Rob Flot and his staff about ways to help your student adjust to College life. Also, if your student is the first one in your family to go to college, there is a helpful session for first-time parents and families. On Saturday, you can have breakfast with health and wellness staff, followed by sessions that help you understand how academic affairs and career services work at the College.

“One-Stop Shop” in Mohr Student Center (Friday until 2:30 p.m.) - You’ll find representatives who can help take care of any last-minute details or questions about financial aid, work study, billing, registration, disability services, textbooks, etc.

Welcome dinner with Lake Forest College President Steve Schutt (Friday 4:45 p.m.) - a great way for you to relax with your student after the day’s activities and get to know the leadership of the College.

Parent welcome reception (Friday 7:00 p.m. at Hilton Garden Inn Mettawa) - where you can get to know other Forester parents in a casual atmosphere over snacks and cocktails, compliments of the Parents Council. Parents only. Register here

Farewell lunch (Saturday at noon) – one last chance to see your student before you part ways.

Other events to save the date for:

Homecoming: October 7-8, 2016:

Homecoming is the next great opportunity for parents and families to come to campus. Thursday night, Temple Grandin, who is well known for her work on animal welfare as well as autism, will speak on campus. On Friday, parents are invited to a special reception with President Schutt, and an outdoor concert and movie with the students. Saturday, your family can join your student for a lively game-day parade and outdoor festival featuring live music, food, entertainment, and a football game.

Family Weekend: February 17-18, 2017:

This is a great mid-year event that the Parents Council hosts for parents and families. You can come to campus and enjoy a nice balance between time with your student and parent and family activities throughout the weekend.

Let us or any of the Parents Council members know if there are any other questions you have, and again, welcome to the Forester Family!
