Students continue volunteering at North Chicago schools
Growing numbers of Lake Forest students, faculty, and staff are volunteering in elementary schools in North Chicago, thanks in large part to a collaboration with the Gorter Family Foundation.
Different groups of students volunteer together or make new friends as they attend the trip to elementary schools just up Green Bay Road. Forrestal and South Elementary are two of the frequently visited schools where Lake Forest students help staff the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County’s after school programming.
“It’s a great afternoon. These students get so excited to see us,” said Bill Dlugokienski, Director of the Gates Center. “It’s the most rewarding experience of my every other week.”
Volunteers help students in kindergarten through fifth grade complete homework and participate in an enrichment project, such as finger painting and decorating paper pumpkins, until their parents come to pick up their children.
“We love that you come because we can definitely use your help to keep working on these [learning activities] with them,” said Boys and Girls Club site administrator, Jerry Banks.
Master of Liberal Studies student, Cate Masek, has volunteered at every opportunity this year. “The director warned us the first week that the kids get attached, but that’s only half the story. The volunteers get attached to,” she said. “It enriches everyone. Everybody wins. I love the opportunity to make a difference and share a smile.”
Upcoming volunteer opportunities are November 17 and December 1 before break. Space is limited. Contact Bill Dlugokienski, Director of the Gates Center to sign up. NCCP opportunities will start again once the spring semester begins.
