Michael Robbins, author of the best-selling Alien vs. Predator (Penguin, 2012) will teach a course titled “The Essay” in the College’s writing program.

Being close to Chicago means the College has access to a bevy of highly respected professionals to tap for teaching courses.  Michael Robbins is an example of one such teacher.

“Michael Robbins is a well-respected poet and essayist, and when we learned he was returning to the Chicago area from a visiting position at the University of Southern Mississippi, we recognized that he would be a perfect match for the creative writing program at Lake Forest College,” explained Davis Schneiderman, chair of the creative writing program at the College.

Robbins’ poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Harpers, Boston Review, and other places. His latest book “Alien vs. Predator” is a best-seller and has been reviewed by dozens of newspapers, the New York Times and Chicago Tribune among them.  In a feature about him in the Chicago Tribune in June, Robbins was called “the poet of the moment.”

Robbins, who got his PhD in English from the University of Chicago, will teach a new upper-level writing course, The Essay. According to Schneiderman, “His course plays to Robbins’ expertise—particularly his writing for The Village Voice—and will offer students a chance to place the blog-centered new-media landscape in a context extending back at least to Montaigne.”

“This is the liberal arts at its most dynamic, and the English Department is thrilled to see how Robbins’ unique sensibility will add to our already outstanding writing program,” added Schneiderman.
