Akua Agyei ’15 is the Lake Forest College senior who best reflects the humanitarian traits embodied by Abraham Lincoln.

The finance and French double-major was selected the 2014 Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

“We look for someone with a very strong character, leadership, and academics, and someone who is working humbly in service to the community,” Assistant Dean of Students Erin Hoffman said. “Akua embodies all those things.”

Agyei’s influence started quietly. “She has gradually blossomed to become a very important leader on our campus,” Hoffman said.

The native of Ghana believes in giving back. “If you sow faithfully, you reap bountifully,” she said.

To help others, Agyei works as a Writing Center tutor, peer teacher, and is involved in Umoja, Model United Nations, Tusitala and Eukaryon.

As the College’s 38th Student Laureate, she received a Medallion of Lincoln, a Certificate of Merit, and small stipend at the November awards ceremony in Springfield.

The Lincoln Academy annually honors one outstanding senior from each four-year college in Illinois whose work contributes to the betterment of humanity in the state.

Agyei is a Davis United World College Scholar, a Grace Elizabeth Groner Foundation Grant Recipient, and a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, Phi Sigma Iota, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
