The Richter research project of sophomores Elise Beckman, Wenqiang Cai, and Rebecca Esrock has been accepted for publication by the Journal of Sports Economics.

In “Explaining Game-to-Game Ticket Sales for Major League Baseball Games over Time,” the research team, under the guidance of Associate Professor of Economics Rob Lemke, argues that MLB teams have become more proficient at employing non-linear pricing schemes to increase team-level profits vis-a-vis increased ticket sales. In particular, teams have become more adept over the last 25 years at using variable ticket pricing, mini-season ticket packages, and online retailers to increase revenues.

The students collected data on over 10,000 baseball games from 1985 through 2009.

This is the second Richter project about MLB ticketing to be published by Economics of Sports. The article comes out sometime next year.
