“President of the Year” and “National Service Project of the Year” awards were announced at the annual Association of College Unions International meetings, held in Boston earlier this month.

Director of the John and Christine Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth William Dlugokienski was there to receive the awards given in recognition of the College’s collaboration with North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) and of President Stephen D. Schutt’s support of  “outside the classroom learning.”

For more than two years, Lake Forest has partnered with the NCCP to link Lake Forest students with service opportunities in North Chicago, a low-income community located six miles north of the campus. Students participate in tutoring and mentoring at the elementary schools there, and bring elementary and middle school students to Lake Forest for science demonstrations and other academic programs.

Dlugokienski oversees the volunteer and community service opportunities for students at the College, including the annual Day of Service, in which students, faculty, and staff come together to give back to the community. He praised President Schutt’s commitment to service, saying “[He] has been a great supporter of the Gates Center and this award highlights that.”

This is the first time the Gates Center has been recognized by the ACUI. “We have made community service programming our priority this year, so the service award is great recognition of our efforts,” Dlugokienski said.

The ACUI is a nonprofit educational organization comprised of students and administrators of colleges and universities around the U.S. and in several other countries. Their mission is to develop a campus community through education, advocacy, and the delivery of services.
