Lake Forest College’s chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity won the Chapter of the Year Award at the Tri-Sectionals conference on April 16, 2011.
Five members of the fraternity traveled to the conference held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The award recognizes one chapter in section 51, which includes Chicago area schools like Northwestern, Loyola, Northern Illinois, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Alpha Phi Omega is a national co-ed service fraternity and the largest Greek letter fraternity in the nation.
This award recognizes the chapter that has the most significant emphasis on each of the three cardinal principles of the fraternity: leadership, friendship, and service. This year, the Lake Forest chapter established several new leadership positions, new pledging education techniques, and a new lounge space on campus.
The fraternity’s growth can also be seen in the increasing number of service opportunities they organized this year. Alpha Phi Omega led several successful events, including trash pick up in the ravines around campus, volunteering to help at Boy Scout family outings, and organizing the TOMS Day Without Shoes.
“I am eager to see what the next year has in store for us as we continue to learn and grow as a chapter,” said chapter president Leah Frenette `12.
