Because of the growing interest in fitness and wellness programming on campus, the Forester Fitness & Wellness Team has extended their offerings to faculty and staff through the summer months.
The Forester Fitness & Wellness Team is helping members of the campus community to keep their fitness and wellness levels in check by encouraging participation in both on- and off-campus activities this summer.
“Our goal this year has been to help members of the campus community become more mindful about the big picture of their health,” said Blake Theisen, a member of the Forester Fitness & Wellness Team. “Being healthy is not just about proper nutrition and working out. Those are certainly important parts, but controlling one’s stress level, maintaining a positive attitude and creating a healthy work-life balance also need consideration.”
These are values the team keeps in mind when planning programs.
Assistant Professor of Music Scott Edgar is one faculty member who takes regular advantage of the fitness classes.
“The faculty and staff fitness program at Lake Forest College has been fantastic!” he said. “As a first-year faculty member, it has given me the opportunity to get to know members of the academic community with whom I normally wouldn’t interact. We have developed a sense of community within our own little workout group. I always look forward to my noon workout break.”
Because of the popularity of faculty/staff fitness classes as well as last winter’s Boomer’s Wellness Challenge, the Forester Fitness & Wellness Team decided to extend those opportunities throughout the summer, including a walking group and bi-weekly boot camp.
“Blake and Ashley Brown do a great job modifying the workout for the level of the individual,” Edgar said.
To address social wellness, the team is hosting three events during the summer, too. The first is Trivia Night on Thursday, May 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Vail Commons in Buchanan Hall. Food and beverages will be provided.
In addition to on-campus wellness events, the team has compiled a list of off-campus activities for faculty and staff, including local farmer’s markets and festivals.
“There are so many fun and healthy opportunities to participate in around Chicagoland during the summer. If you are not interested in the events we outlined, we hope you’ll be motivated to research things going on in your own neighborhood,” Theisen said.
