Disease detective

Ann Maine, a senior lecturer in biology, was an event supervisor at the Illinois Science Olympiad competition, where she wrote the exam for “Disease Detectives,” an epidemiology event.

Maine’s test covered child health in Nigeria and the impact of deforestation and human activity on malaria rates in Brazil and in Cacao, French Guiana. The national Science Olympiad topic focuses on human health and population growth.  

More than 50 high schools from across the state competed in the Illinois Science Olympiad.
