Conquer the phone
The Career Advancement Center will host Mock Phone Interview Week beginning March 23.
The same students who easily text, email, and Instagram can fumble during an important phone interview for a job, internship, or grad school.
“This is a hurdle students need to get over before they’re invited to an in-person interview,” said Alina Guarise, associate director of the Career Advancement Center.
To help students prepare for the crucial phone interview format, the CAC is hosting Mock Phone Interview Week beginning Monday, March 23.
Students can practice their phone-interviewing skills during a 30-minute phone conversation with a Forester Career Network alum or professional volunteer. The interviewer will ask each student some of the most common interview questions and provide feedback on their responses.
“Phone interviews are particularly challenging, because students are not always used to speaking on the phone,” Guarise said. “You can’t use nonverbal cues, like body language and facial expression, to demonstrate your enthusiasm in the position and to make a connection with the interviewer.”
Students in any major or class year who want to practice their interviewing skills can sign up for one or more practice interview sessions with alumni and professionals from AbbVie, Lockton Companies, Harper Collins Publishers, RTI International, Lake Forest College, and Ernst & Young among other organizations.
To view a complete list and to sign up, students should go to their ForesterLink account and click on the “Mock Interview” tab. Click here for more information on Mock Phone Interview Week.
