The current secretary of the student government was honored on November 6 during a ceremony sponsored by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois at the Old State Capital Historic Site in Springfield.
Allie Winkelman ’11, student government secretary, was honored in early November as the College’s recipient of the Lincoln Academy’s Student Laureate award at the Old State Capitol in Springfield.
The Lincoln Academy’s Student Laureate Awards are presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to seniors from each of the four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities in Illinois.
“These students have exhibited a personal commitment to excel as seen by their remarkable academic accomplishments,” said Thomas S. Johnson, Chancellor of the Lincoln Academy, who added, “They serve as role models to other Illinois students. With hard-working and dedicated young leaders such as these, Illinois and the rest of the nation can look forward to a bright future.”
Winkelman, a sociology/anthropology and politics double major from Park City, Utah, has been a student representative on College Council, the College’s governance board, and the Student Affairs Committee with the Board of Trustees. She has been a resident assistant in Blackstone residence hall for three years, last year being selected as “Resident Assistant of the Year.” She is a current member of Lambda Alpha Honor Society for Anthropology, as well as serving on the Academic Advisory Board.
Winkelman is the current President of Alpha Phi Women’s Fraternity and current Chair of “Relay for Life,” which has received national recognition for money raised for the last two years, and Allie served as intern for the American Cancer Society last spring. Winkelman received the Jacob Edwards Wardell Prize for Leadership as a rising sophomore and was the recipient of the “Commitment to Community Service Award” in 2010. She was selected last year as a member of the College’s “Senior 25,” for the graduating class of 2011.
The Lincoln Academy, unique among the 50 states, was established 46 years ago to honor Illinois’ most distinguished citizens with the state’s highest award, the Order of Lincoln.
