Learning Remotely at Lake Forest College

Here are the top five things you need to think about as you learn remotely:

  1. Clear communication.

  2. Internet and device access. 

  3. Knowledge of Moodle.

  4. Commitment to spend time in your classes.

  5. Familiarity with online resources.


Your professors will be in contact with you to let you know how to best communicate for your individual courses.

  • Course materials and assignments will be made available through Moodle unless your professor tells you otherwise.
    See this reference to learn more about how to interact with your assignments on Moodle.
  • Use email to correspond with your professors.
    To access your Lake Forest email remotely, see this guide.
  • Zoom is used for remote access to class meetings and for faculty office hours.
    More information about Zoom video conferences is available here.
  • If you do not have the required technology and access, be proactive in communicating this to ITS (see below) so that we can work together in finding solutions.

Internet and Device Access

You will need reliable and consistent Internet access from a computer.

  • Ideally, the computer should be equipped with a microphone and camera that is either built-in or externally connected through USB or Bluetooth.
  • If no camera and microphone capabilities are available through the computer, a mobile device with those capabilities can substitute.

Note: A mobile device will allow you to communicate with your professors and other students and to review information on Moodle, but they may not be sufficient to complete all of your coursework.

Most professors will use Moodle to share course materials and manage assignments and exams. Login to Moodle at https://moodle.lakeforest.edu to see the latest updates for your classes. If you have difficulty accessing materials in any of your courses, reach out to your professor right away.

Time Management

  • Daily Check-in: Expect to check your email and Moodle courses several times a day. Keeping up with new class assignments and other notifications are crucial to having a successful online experience.
  • Time: Expect to spend as much time, if not more time, engaging with your class commitments as you did when you were on campus.
  • Synchronous Options: Plan to participate in any scheduled virtual class meetings as scheduled by your professors. Also, take advantage of any online office hours offered. Your professor will use Zoom for synchronous meetings.
  • Communicate: Take the time to promptly communicate via Moodle or email with your professors or classmates if you have questions. Ask for feedback or clarification.
  • Support: Before spending too much time on tasks that seem unclear, be sure to reach out for assistance.

Network and Online Resources Files

  • Access to the Lake Forest Network (ForesterNET): You need to install the OpenVPN client to connect to the Lake Forest College network from off campus. Directions to install OpenVPN on your computer or mobile device are available here.
  • U-Drive: Many of you have stored important files in your U: drive. This is where all of your files are stored when you have saved a file on a PC lab machine too.
    If you need to access your U: drive files from off campus:
    1. Follow the directions above to connect to VPN.
    2. Next, connect to your stored U: drive as noted here.
  • Office Online and OneDrive: You have access to Microsoft Office and OneDrive online on the Web.
    1. Enter mail.lakeforest.edu in your Web browser and login with your Lake Forest email address (@mx.lakeforest.edu) and password.
    2. Once logged in, click on the “waffle” (the nine dots in the upper left corner to the left of the “Outlook” title.)
    3. Select the application or OneDrive resource you want to access to begin or resume work
  • Specialty software: Your professor will let you know if there is special remote access to software you need to complete your online course work.
