Scott Edgar co-launches new podcast exploring the heart of teaching music
Celebrated for his scholarship in social emotional learning, Chair and Associate Professor of Music Scott Edgar has always held a passion for teaching music. Now, a new podcast backed by the nonprofit organization Music for All is helping Edgar broaden his reach.
“Without people, there is no music.” This is the core belief behind The Heart of Music Education, a podcast dedicated to exploring the teaching of music. Each week, the podcast invites inspiring leaders in music and music education to share stories of music's ability to make a difference in people's lives.
Edgar hosts the podcast with longtime colleague and friend Julia Baumanis, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Bands at Rutgers University. Edgar and Baumanis interview guests, who are often prolific figures in music and music education, to uncover how music education nurtures growth.
“We are focusing on how we can explore the humanity behind music,” Edgar said. “I want to inspire people through people who are walking the walk and having great thoughts. I want people to be able to listen to a very powerful conversation and escape into parts of the profession that are fulfilling and rewarding that we forget about in the daily grind.”
Listeners are encouraged to ask and record questions that are then shared with the guest during the recording session.
The Heart of Music Education has a 27-episode contract for season one and will feature guests such as Dré Graham, Adolphus Hailstork, Paula Crider, Jason Fettig, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra composer in residence Jessie Montgomery, among other figures in music education.
