The 2026 Lake Forest College Commencement ceremony took place on the morning of Saturday, May 9, at Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont, Illinois, with 460 new graduates receiving their degrees.

Saturday marked the 148th Commencement exercises for the 169-year-old College, but the first for President Michael J. Sosulski at Lake Forest.

In his opening address, President Sosulski welcomed the graduates and guests acknowledging the transformational experience the new grads underwent during their time at Lake Forest College.

“One of my greatest joys over the past year has been getting to know this community. And especially getting to know you, our students,” President Sosulski said. “I have tremendous confidence in what you will do next because I have seen your talent and determination—and your heart. You are ready. Go forward with curiosity, purpose, and gratitude.”

Following his remarks, Chairman of the Board Bill Lowry ’84 presented US Senator Richard J. Durbin as honorary degree recipient and Commencement speaker.

In his address, Durbin reflected on lessons drawn from more than four decades in public service, urging graduates to value storytelling, mentorship, integrity, and compassion in both their personal and professional lives. Framing his remarks through a series of personal stories—from advocating for Dreamers to passing landmark anti-smoking legislation inspired by his father’s death—Durbin encouraged the Class of 2026 to pursue work that is meaningful to them and to never underestimate the impact of small acts of kindness and loyalty.

“With family and friends, you are closing one door and opening another. Enjoy this summer moment in your life. And perhaps, as you step into your next chapter, one or two of these lessons I’ve learned will help,” Durbin concluded. Read Senator Durbin's remarks.

Senior class speaker Doyinsola Ogunshola ’26 addressed the Class of 2026 to rounds of applause. Krebs Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Tara Natarajan presented the candidates for graduate and undergraduate degrees, which Chairman Lowry awarded. Following an acknowledgment of the graduates by Interim Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Students Tony Tyler, Emily Bailey ’26 sang the alma mater. A closing benediction concluded the ceremony.
