Ellie Bacon

What made you choose Lake Forest College?

I chose Lake Forest College because of the small overall size, small class size, research opportunities, and proximity to Chicago.

How did a liberal arts education make a difference for you?

A liberal arts eduction has made me a more well-rounded individual. In terms of my field (biology), I feel that I can bring more to the table as I am able to think outside the box and bring in diverse interpretations and suggestions for research.

What experiences outside of the classroom do you think will help prepare you for veterinary school?

Outside of the class room, the experiences that I think prepared me most for vet school were my for-credit internships at Niles Animal and Bird Hospital and Chicago Equine Vet Hospital. Both gave me hands-on medical experience with a range of different species.

How did your time at Lake Forest help you prepare to apply to veterinary programs?

Lake Forest College has allowed me to take the needed pre-requisite courses and gave me an advantage with all the research opportunities I had here. This is something that is hard to come by at larger institutions. Specifically, I got access to research early on through the Richter Scholar Program.

What skills and experiences at Lake Forest do you believe will help you be successful?

I believe the skills and traits I need to be successful include communication, critical analysis, collaboration, perseverance, leadership, listening ability, teaching ability, curiosity, ambition, and enthusiasm. Experiences include research, working with veterinarians, team projects, and presentations.

What advice would you give a high school student looking to pursue Pre-health and is considering going to Lake Forest?

My advice would be to look into the requirements for whatever programs you are interested in and talk with the pre-health advising committee here to see if those can be met. Most likely the answer is yes!
